I hope you'll enjoy this re-rebroadcast of one of my all-time favorite blogs and episodes of The MOJO Show this week. Apparently it's one of your favorites, too, as the 2nd most downloaded MOJO Show episode! Whenever I catch myself getting daunted by the seeming enormity of it all (and that can be more frequently than I would hope), I remind myself of the nuggets of wisdom in this episode. I hope there's some insight here for you, too, that helps with whatever looming things you've got going on in your week.
Whether you realize it or not, we give ourselves prescriptions for better health and well-being, perhaps even more mojo, all the time. Be it a new exercise routine, or an eating habit, a financial budget, a morning routine, or even…a yoga challenge, we can always come up with an idea and a plan for some form of “medicine” that we believe will better ourselves. Just think about it: how many prescriptions for more mojo have you come up with for yourself this year?
Change can be difficult, and boy have we had a lot of changes around MOJO lately! Catch up with Jean Marie and Scott and all the goings on, plus get the lowdown on the immediate future, contribute your thoughts, and pickup some handy resources to help you handle any of your own changes with a little more grace and a lot less AACK!
Ever feel like you're running around like the poor proverbial chicken with no head? We do, too. But that's why we have yoga, right?! Our yoga mat calls to us with the reminder that slow is smooth and smooth is oftentimes the fastest way to do anything. This week's #FreeVideoFriday, Meredith Cameron's Molasses, will help us remember to slow down and be clear in what we're doing when life tries to whip us into a frenzy.
Are you ready for summer yet? Now that we're in the full swing of spring, it's high time to start dusting off the winter cobwebs (if you haven't already) and getting into a sunny summer state of mind. So, whether you're a surfer or beach bunny or lawn jockey, everyone can tap into that happy outdoors mindset with this week's #FreeVideoFriday: Yoga for Surfers with Jean Marie Johnson!
Sadly, anxiety abounds these days in the US, and it's safe to say in much of the rest of the world. For many it's acutely heightened by political tensions and uncertainty in the moment. For others of us, it's just a daily struggle. Fortunately for all of us, we do have the refuge of meditation and yoga to help us take care of the one thing over which we do have a chance at exercising some control in this world: our state of mind.
Ready for your free treat this week? Lisa Simmons designed this week's feature specifically for runners, but it's also a great practice for anyone who wants more open hips and hamstrings with a stronger core and more relaxed vibe. Yes, please!
I hope you'll enjoy this rebroadcast of one of my favorite blogs and episodes of The MOJO Show this week. Team MOJO is busily preparing to be part of Hawaii's biggest entrepreneurial and tech startup conference at East Meets West. We're kicking off the conference with a yoga class on the beach and wrapping it up with an on-stage presentation of MOJO Yoga to all the people of startup land. Whenever I catch myself getting daunted by the seeming enormity of it all (and that's quite frequently), I remind myself of the nuggets of wisdom in this episode. I hope there's some insight here for you, too, that helps with whatever looming things you've got going on in your week.
This week we have a special guest posting from Kelsey Struble. She is an avid yogi who began her practice at home, and prefers to keep it that way. Maybe some of you readers can relate?
lus, get the latest update from the ladies of Team MOJO on a brand new video edition of The MOJO Show. We're working on how to promote our business in our accelerator program, and we've got some tips for our fellow yoga teachers and entrepreneurs on how to market yourself without the ick-factor. Spoiler: there are farts involved.
It's really, really, really ridiculously good for us to laugh. It should be abundantly clear by now that we're all about the funny, whether it be straight up laughter yoga or identifying unholy names for your Mula Bandha or dressing up in costume for Instagram. Thus it is in this spirit of frivolity that we present to you this week a chance to win one of our brand new funny shirts!
Whatever your work day might look like, I'm willing to bet that it's hard on you in some way: physically, mentally, or emotionally. If I'm right, say, "Gawd, yes!" I know you work hard, and are often short on time to care of yourself. That's why this week I'm giving the long format read a break and cutting to the chase. Please accept my offering to you of 10 moves to yogafy your work day in my Office Yoga video from the Find Your MOJO Challenge.
Core strength: it’s something with which everyone seems to be obsessed. And that’s a good thing, not just for the ever-elusive sexy six pack, but for the practical function it serves in our lives. You see, nearly all the movements we make in the world come from our core and are stabilized by our core.
Ever feel like you’re lost in the minutiae of day-to-day living? Are you overrun with to-do’s but have no idea where all those do’s are taking you? Me too. That’s why I started a visioning practice: to clarify my vision for my life and my big Why, infusing my to-do’s with inspiration and purpose. I want to share this practice with you this week, along with a Visioning Meditation below, to perhaps help spark some motivation for you in these dog days of summer.
Let’s get back on track with our re-introduction to the splendid spine, shall we? If you missed the first installment, check it out here. I’ve received a lot of great feedback about this series: especially regarding the anatomical overview. You see, if you’re like me you don’t bother to get to know your body’s mechanics until something breaks and you’re forced to figure it out in order to get out of pain. So, hopefully this will help us all get a clearer picture of how our spines are designed to function optimally, and the measures we can take to not only avoid breaking our backs but to keep them in tip-top shape.
So, your dog likely does a pretty great Upward Facing Dog, and loves it. But, confession time, here. How do you really feel about your Upward Facing Dog? If your answer is not exactly in the positive, you're not alone. This pose is one of the most commonly disliked poses in students I've just met. But, never fear, because it's also one of my most commonly rehabilitated poses for students once we've had a chance to refine it a bit! Developing a happy relationship with this pose is typically just a matter of making a few refinements to get our whole body involved, rather than dumping strain into one or two poor overworked areas.
Every now and then I mention something about shtula and sukshma: specifically, that yoga is all about moving from the shtula (the gross or surface level of things) to the sukshma (the subtle layers below the surface). In the beginning, especially for us in the Western world, yoga is very much about the outward appearance of different postures. We try to make our bodies match the shapes of demonstrated ideal postures, and either revel or cringe at what we find in doing so. Then, as we become more familiar with the postures, we start to pay closer attention to how they feel from the inside.
Ok, pop quiz time. How well do you know your dogs? By that I mean your yoga dogs, of course! Yoga is all about dogs: downward facing ones, upward facing ones, three legged ones, and on and on. They’re a huge part of our practice on the mat, so let’s turn our spotlight on them to get our puppy mojo working!
It can really be damn hard to stay focused, especially when we have a big vision with lots of accompanying goals and things to do every single day. No matter what our direction in life, we can easily become so overwhelmed with things that we have to do and want to do, that we might even forget momentarily what it’s like to be in a state of focus. This sort of multitasking existence leads us to touching upon many things, yes, but never truly giving any one thing our full attention.
Raise your hand if you’ve ever experienced a back problem. Yeah, me too. Our backs are so critically important to our wellbeing and our ability to operate in the world. And yet, how much do you really know about your own spine? Do you know how your yoga practice affects it? Well, by more popular demand this week we’re bringing to you an updated series shining light on our splendiferous spines!
Some of you might remember the Sutra Sagacity series from back in the days of Infinity Crossing. Well, partly because some of you asked for it, and partly because I feel the philosophy and psychology of yoga is vastly undervalued against the fun and immediacy of the physical practice, we are happily resurrecting, revamping, and updating this series here for you, the MOJO Mob. You see, the lessons we learn from our yoga practice can transform how and why we live our lives the way we do, driving us to live with more mojo off the mat and even design our own MOJO Life. So, whether this in-depth look at the wisdom of yoga is new to you or a review, I know there are fresh nuggets of knowledge for us all to glean here.
