At the start of a new year our thoughts often turn to the things to which we feel true devotion: our loved ones, our health, our happiness, and our dreams. We have so many things we’d like to accomplish, experience, and bring to fruition in this one life! And thoughts like these are why such a phenomenon as “new year’s resolutions” even exists. Yet, we all know the dismal success rate of those strobe light intentions, as I’m going to start calling them. You know, they’re mostly momentary flashes of brilliance surrounded by oceans of darkness. So, if our “resolutions” are sparked by the things to which we feel deep devotion and for which we have long desired, why do we often so utterly fail at keeping up with them?
Psychology Today reveals that one of the most common reasons for resolution failure is “cultural procrastination,” meaning making an effort to reinvent oneself when one is simply not ready to change their habits. Another pitfall is called “false hope syndrome,” wherein one sets goals that are entirely unrealistic and out of sync with how one views themselves. And finally, we could fall prey to false perceptions of cause and effect, meaning we think losing weight or managing our money will change our lives entirely or make us happy all the time, when that simply isn’t realistic. All of these obstacles lead us to discouragement and backsliding into our old ways.
It’s well known nowadays that changing our habitual behavior is a matter of changing our brains. This is because “habitual behavior is created by thinking patterns that create neural pathways and memories, which become the default basis for your behavior when you’re faced with a choice or decision… Change requires creating new neural pathways from new thinking.” (source)
And how long does it really take to change our brains? Common knowledge spouts a mere 21 days. However, this maxim may be yet another trigger for our false hope syndrome. A recent study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology found that, depending upon the person and the nature of the habit, it really takes anywhere from 18 to 254 days, and an average of two months, before a new behavior truly becomes automatic. (source)
But before you get all bummed out that enacting positive change in our lives is too hard, the same researchers also found that “missing one opportunity to perform the behavior did not materially affect the habit formation process.” It’s alright if we drop the ball every now and then, as we’re bound to do, so long as we keep going in our pursuit. And for most of us, the hardest part is getting going in the right direction.
You know by now that this is really what we’re all about here at MOJO: helping you find your mojo to create positive and lasting changes in your life and a life you love to live. We focus on yoga as a gateway for a number of reasons: it’s easily habit-forming, it helps us see immediate change in our state of being, and it helps us put more conscious attention into everything we do in our lives. However, a well-rounded, full life is a multi-faceted diamond, with layer upon layer of fine details that once bound together sparkle and shine for the long haul. And that, my friends, is why we’re inviting you to put your yoga to work in your life, and take a real challenge to charge into this new year ahead.
Join us for the Find Your MOJO Challenge!
More than the pose-a-day kind of challenge, this is a lifestyle design challenge that will guide you on a program we’re constantly testing, practicing, and refining to help us keep moving forward in building our own MOJO Life, and we know it will help you progress in your dream life, too. But be forewarned: it ain’t going to be easy, that’s for sure! Creating the lifestyle of your dreams will always seem in many ways to be much harder than just living the status quo kind of life. After all, it feels easier to go with the flow of the herd, doesn’t it? However cliché it might sound, though, it’s undoubtedly true that none of us wants to leave this life thinking, “I wish had done…”
And so, the Find Your MOJO Challenge is your opportunity to walk with us on this day-to-day practice of creating more mojo for ourselves and our lives. Each day will present you with a new challenge area of lifestyle design, and some solutions to help you enact positive, measurable change immediately. The challenge lasts for the month of January, 2016, but is chock-full of tips, resources, and exercises to last you the entire year and beyond. You’ll be able to revisit each and every lesson in this challenge many times over to keep building your lifestyle design skills. This should take you a long way towards making lifestyle design a habit in your daily living.
