Did you know that when you’re a MOJO Member, a portion of your membership goes to support charitable organizations that work to build mojo where it’s most needed in this world? Well, now you do.
(Be sure to read all the way to the end of this post for a very special offer.)
Some of you may remember that before we became MOJO, we were a wee pup of a company called Infinity Crossing with a charitable giving practice that we called 1% for the ‘Aina. Now, as MOJO Yoga, we’re still practicing charitable giving and we’re calling it Give MOJO.
This practice arose to pay homage to one of our business idols, Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia and 1% for the Planet. If you’d like to know more about him, check out his book (one of our all-time favorites), “Let My People Go Surfing.”
As yogis, good stewardship in life and in business is a no-brainer. It’s the very first limb of yoga - the yamas (universal moral codes or the golden rules of yoga). Giving to others is inherent in the principles of ahimsa (nonviolence, love), satya (truthfulness), asteya (non-stealing, respect), brahmacharya (moderation) and aparigraha (non-hoarding). Simply put, all of the yamas remind us to be good people, and since businesses are people too, so must our business practices follow suit. As Mr. Iyengar puts it, “These ethical precepts are always with us from the beginning to the end of the yoga journey, for the demonstration of one’s spiritual realization lies in none other than how one walks among and interacts with one’s fellow human beings.” (Light on Life, p.11)
Our Give MOJO recipient this time around is Women Helping Women Maui. They’ve made it their mission to offer emergency shelter and programs for victims of domestic violence. Domestic violence and abusive relationships shouldn’t exist, but they do. The best thing someone in an abusive relationship can do is leave it and get help. Yet, it’s shockingly difficult to extricate ourselves from unhealthy and even dangerous situations for reasons that are all to often complex and difficult to understand unless you’ve been through it yourself. The work Women Helping Women Maui does is very near and dear to my heart. Vulnerability Alert: this is the first organization we’ve given to that’s made me break down and cry. It means that much to me. I’d like to give so much more than we’re able to at the moment, but every little bit helps. We’re so proud to Give MOJO to support their invaluable and incredibly challenging work.
