Have you ever tried to hold a clump of sand in your hands? Of course you have. Then you know that the more tightly you try to grip it the more the sand just falls from every crack and crevice. You also know the other side of that coin, too: if you're too lackadaisical you'll drop the whole load. To keep a hold on as much of your precious sand as possible, your grip must be structured yet relaxed, balanced, and at ease. It's much the same with our grip on anything we do to build our ideal lifestyle.
Change can be difficult, and boy have we had a lot of changes around MOJO lately! Catch up with Jean Marie and Scott and all the goings on, plus get the lowdown on the immediate future, contribute your thoughts, and pickup some handy resources to help you handle any of your own changes with a little more grace and a lot less AACK!
We’ve been journeying together with MOJO Yoga for a little over a year now, and some of us for much longer still, on other platforms or even in-person. I can speak for the entire team behind MOJO when I say that we’re so deeply grateful for you, your support, and your desire to make your world a better place through yoga.
Yet, it’s never been about yoga alone. Rather, it’s been about yoga as a seed, as a critical part, of a thriving, vibrant, healthy lifestyle. If you’ve paid attention, you’ve noticed along the way that our big vision here at MOJO is and has always been to help all of us make wellbeing a way of life and to be our best selves in every way possible, every day.
A happy Friday to you, and along with that we wish you happy hips, too! This week's #FreeVideoFriday is a classic favorite of ours from Shannon Algeo: his Happy Hips practice.
This 65-minute yoga session with Shannon is designed for all levels (take it at your pace) and is great to practice at any time of day. If your hips and lower back are feeling tight, this is a great practice to restore balance and oil up the joints for optimal ease and relief.
If you love breath work and if you love feeling great, you want to tune in to this episode of The MOJO Show featuring special guest Rohi Custage!
She's one of the newest instructors in the MOJO community and she's a specialist in the practice of Gamma Breath. This transformative breath work practice targets gamma brain waves. What is gamma? Gamma state is defined as a brain state where experience, knowledge and wisdom swirl around and form new ideas - the "ah-ha" experience, if you will.
For many weeks after we started our podcast, The MOJO Show, my mom thought that where said "Hey MOJO Mob" we were actually saying "Hey MOJO Moms!" 🤣Well, this week's #FreeVideoFriday is actually all about MOJO moms with Monique Ducharme-Pullen's Prenatal Yoga for the 1st Trimester. Now, this is a great video to learn about important do's and don'ts when you find yourself with child. It's also got some great, soothing practices that everyone, pregnant or not, will certainly enjoy.
If life has you feeling a little rough around the edges, or just plain worn out, this week's #FreeVideoFriday will hit the reset button on the nose. Sara Crawford's Rest and Recovery Day invites us to take a nice full break from the rest of the world and dive in to a well-rounded practice to rejuvenate our bodies and our spirits. It's designed for CrossFitters and athletes, but every body will benefit from this recovery practice.
Ever feel like you're running around like the poor proverbial chicken with no head? We do, too. But that's why we have yoga, right?! Our yoga mat calls to us with the reminder that slow is smooth and smooth is oftentimes the fastest way to do anything. This week's #FreeVideoFriday, Meredith Cameron's Molasses, will help us remember to slow down and be clear in what we're doing when life tries to whip us into a frenzy.
Are you ready for summer yet? Now that we're in the full swing of spring, it's high time to start dusting off the winter cobwebs (if you haven't already) and getting into a sunny summer state of mind. So, whether you're a surfer or beach bunny or lawn jockey, everyone can tap into that happy outdoors mindset with this week's #FreeVideoFriday: Yoga for Surfers with Jean Marie Johnson!
Sadly, anxiety abounds these days in the US, and it's safe to say in much of the rest of the world. For many it's acutely heightened by political tensions and uncertainty in the moment. For others of us, it's just a daily struggle. Fortunately for all of us, we do have the refuge of meditation and yoga to help us take care of the one thing over which we do have a chance at exercising some control in this world: our state of mind.
Ready for your free treat this week? Lisa Simmons designed this week's feature specifically for runners, but it's also a great practice for anyone who wants more open hips and hamstrings with a stronger core and more relaxed vibe. Yes, please!
This week's free treat comes to you courtesy of MOJO powerhouse, Meredith Cameron. Chaturanga Dandasana (4 Limbed Staff Pose): if you know anything about yoga you probably have some strong opinions about it. Well, Meredith has a great take on Chaturanga that's all about stability, with actionable tips you can incorporate into your practice starting right now.
Happy Friday, indeed! #FreeVideoFriday is back and this one's a very special treat: Day 1 of Kassandra Reinhardt's 14 Day Yin & Yang Yoga Challenge. It's a 2 week program for a stronger, leaner, more stress-free you... Yes, please!
We're baaaack! That's right, after a brief hiatus to work our butts off and recover from a ridiculously long "big push," The MOJO Show is back online! This episode is an interview we recorded at the end of our time in Honolulu, with special guest Tara Rudolf.
Tara is the founder of tararudolf.com, and also happens to be one of the newest additions to the MOJO Yoga international teacher community!
I hope you'll enjoy this rebroadcast of one of my favorite blogs and episodes of The MOJO Show this week. Team MOJO is busily preparing to be part of Hawaii's biggest entrepreneurial and tech startup conference at East Meets West. We're kicking off the conference with a yoga class on the beach and wrapping it up with an on-stage presentation of MOJO Yoga to all the people of startup land. Whenever I catch myself getting daunted by the seeming enormity of it all (and that's quite frequently), I remind myself of the nuggets of wisdom in this episode. I hope there's some insight here for you, too, that helps with whatever looming things you've got going on in your week.
This week we're exceedingly honored to have with us on The MOJO Show special guest Margot Schmorak. She's the CEO and Co-founder of Hostfully, offering personalized guidebooks for vacation rental owners. Now, Margot is pretty darn special in general, but what makes her really special for us is that she's the only other female founder in our cohort here at Blue Startups. And to top it all off, she's a yogi and a mom! So, in this episode, we chat about women in business and society at large, how to be both a business owner and a great mom, and how yoga and meditation help us integrate all of our many aspects into one balanced, vibrant life.
Happy New Year to all MOJO people! We're absolutely thrilled to announce that it's finally here in the new year...The Brand New MOJO!
To hear more about the new site from co-founders Jean Marie and Scott, have a listen to our always irreverent discussion about the brand new MOJO in a brand new episode of The MOJO Show. While you listen, peruse the new website and join us now to get your connections and your mojo working.
The new year is almost upon us, and are you as pumped as I am?! New Year's celebrations are my absolute favorite holiday, and you can hear why in this week's episode of The MOJO Show. And our #FreeVideoFriday feature this week is yet another new year ritual that makes this time of year so special: it's my Tips for Your 108 Sun Salutations!
Time sure does fly when you’re having boat loads of fun, doesn’t it? Well, another year is coming to an end, and what have you done with your time?
I’m guessing the answer to that question is: a lot! That's why it's time to take stock of all this year's wins and losses and prepare ourselves to level-up in the new year to come. To help you honor this special occasion that only comes once a year, I've created for you not one but 2 free gifts! But before you jump into those, take a deeper dive on both of your free goal setting and planning resources with Scott and me in a new episode of The MOJO Show.
On the 12th day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Yoga for Surfers - Viloma with Jean Marie!
The more intelligent control we have over our breath, the more consciously we can move through our lives. Viloma, or 3 Part Breathing, is an excellent exercise for training our breath control and capacity. This breathing practice is foundational for everyone who wants to build that relationship with the breath, as well as train the mind to find calm while pushing our comfort zones, and even find aid in times of insomnia or scattered energy.
On the 10th day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Molasses with Meredith!
Let things be as they are, on your yoga mat and in your life. A non-stop flow that is slow and sweet. As we move through familiar yoga poses, we become an observer to what is going on in our bodies. It all becomes a reminder that moving quickly doesn't necessarily mean getting more done. Move slow with me and witness the sweet quality of observation.
On the 9th day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Gentle Restorative with Kassandra!
Relax and renew with this fusion of gentle and restorative yoga practices. This will utilize minimal props yet still offer the full benefits of restorative yoga: shedding tension and stress, activating our rest and digest mode, and refreshing mind, body, and spirit. Enjoy!
On the 8th day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Meditations of Healing with Amy!
These short but powerful meditations demonstrated by Amy are derived from the book: Meditations for Addictive Behavior. You can add them to your daily yoga practice to support healing from substance addiction, co-dependency or any other lifestyle pattern which isn't serving your highest good.
On the 7th day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Happy Hips with Shannon!
This 65-minute yoga session with Shannon is designed for all levels (take it at your pace) and is great to practice at any time of day. If your hips and lower back are feeling tight, this is a great practice to restore balance and oil up the joints for optimal ease and relief. Enjoy!
On the 6th day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Four Part Purification with Sara!
In this video you will learn 4 pranayamas for purifying the body and mind and increase your internal flow of Prana. The four pranayamas introduced in this video are: nadi sodhana, kapalbhati, agnisara and ashwini mudra.
On the 5th day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Good Morning Sun with Allison!
Join Allison for a short practice that you can do with your kids. There are fun animal noises to coincide with some of our favorite poses to keep the kids engaged and entertained all while learning basic yoga.
On the 4th day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Low Back Love with Lisa!
This class is suitable for anyone with a day-job that sits at a desk, for anyone who suffers from lower back pain or even simple discomfort. Practice will start with gentle breath work, lengthening of our spine and strengthening our core through abdominal work.
On the 3rd day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Forward Motion with Meredith!
Forward we go, because that’s the direction life moves. It’s normal to want to stay in our cozy comfort zones, however, it’s very necessary to open up those places and spaces where we might be putting limitations on ourselves.
On the 2nd day of MOJO my true love gave to me...free Twists with Kassandra!
Twists are a wonderfully detoxifying practice, and perfect to help us recover from those times when we might overindulge during the holiday season (Because even yogis gotta have some of that holiday cheer, right?).
Unwrap and enjoy this practice free for the next 24 hours!
Well, MOJO Mob, believe it or not, we’ve rounded the corner in our 2015 Year by Design race: it’s time to turn on the afterburners and make the sprint to the finish. In other words, it’s time to check in with our goals progress thus far and redouble our efforts for the rest of the year. So crack your knuckles and sharpen your pencils, folks. It’s about to get real around here.
Maybe it's the gardener in me. For some reason fall, nay autumn (I've always loved that word), feels like a natural time to clear out the old and make preparations for the new. Often, spring is thought of as the time for cleaning out that which has become stale, musty, and old. Yet, to me, autumn is equally as worthy of a good clearing out. Gardeners are well aware of nature's cycle, even in a seemingly consistent climate such as ours. There are subtle, yet definitive, seasons (even here) in which certain things thrive and others die back. This is critical to the inherent diversity and balance of natural life. Autumn is the time for reaping the harvests of all our hard work from summer, preparing to rest and restore through the winter before life can begin flourishing anew in the spring.
What's your routine when you're down? We give a lot of attention to our everyday routines in building our ideal MOJO Life of greater health and happiness. Yet, how much thought have you ever given to what happens when you crash and burn? Whether due to illness, or a physiological condition, or a mental or emotional nosedive, we all go down from time to time. And I'd be willing to bet that you have a "down routine," meaning a set of comfort behaviors that you default to in a physical, mental, or emotional wreck. So, what is your down routine?
Whether you realize it or not, we give ourselves prescriptions for better health and well-being, perhaps even more mojo, all the time. Be it a new exercise routine, or an eating habit, a financial budget, a morning routine, or even…a yoga challenge, we can always come up with an idea and a plan for some form of “medicine” that we believe will better ourselves. Just think about it: how many prescriptions for more mojo have you come up with for yourself this year? I’ll bet it’s more than a few. Personally, I can count over 70 just looking at the wall next to my desk where I keep my Yearly Vision and Monthly Goals worksheets thumb-tacked up for daily viewing. Yes, I’m one of THOSE doctors. Don’t hate. How many of my own pills have I swallowed? About half. That leaves another half of my sad little pills sitting around on the table, wondering if they’ll expire before fulfilling their sacred purpose. What about you? How many of your own prescriptions have you managed to take this year?
This week we’re bringing you a guest post from a friend of ours, Jill Corleone. Educated at New York University, she is a Registered Dietician/Nutritionist with over a decade of experience publishing thousands of pieces on outlets like the Huffington Post, livestrong.com, and ehow.com about maintaining a balanced, healthy approach to our eating habits.
Eleanor Roosevelt said that we’re damned if we do and damned if we don’t, so I say we might as well do! You see, this absolutely applies to our efforts to create the MOJO Life: the happy, healthy lifestyle of our dreams. It’s damn hard to do the little things every single day that it takes to build the ideal lifestyles we hold in our hearts: it takes a lot of effort and will to sustain forward progress. Oftentimes, our brains tell us it might be easier to just wallow in our old crappy habits; after all, they’ve become so fitted to our form over time. Yet, we all know by now that those old habits always leave us feeling disappointed, or worse. So, when confronted with the choice to do or don’t do, yes, in a sense we are damned either way we go. Fortunately, we also know in our heart of hearts that when we do manage to do even a little bit of our happiness practices, we’re always left feeling, well, happier. The damnation of doing, therefore, has a leg up because it leads to salvation! Glory hallelujah!
Why fun with yoga? Well, we know firsthand how easy it can be to find ourselves taking our yoga (and ourselves) so seriously that the joy gets drained right out of our efforts. "Why is joy so important?" you ask in a curmudgeonly tone. Well, grumpy pants, because we'll never stick with anything that doesn't bring us joy. And if we want to have healthy habits, like yoga, for the rest of our long and happy lives, we have to be sure we're always seeking the fun in them.
The semicolon is what some call “the most feared punctuation on earth.” (theoatmeal.com) Our guest on The MOJO Show this week challenges all of us not only to never fear this grammatical demon, but instead embrace the semicolon, for there is always more to write in the book of our lives. Our very special guest host on The MOJO Show this week is Jasmine Judson, the founder of the brand new Afterglow Yoga Studio in Maui. She sits in with Jean Marie (Scott will be back next week!) for an enlightening conversation about manifestation through practical action, finding work-life balance, the highs and lows of starting your own business, and how to always keep putting your lifestyle first.
Sea Salted Sunshine is all up in our cupcakes, that’s what. I hear there might be mango filling and cardamom frosting in there, too. Oh, AND they’re gluten and dairy-free. Sound too good to be true? I assure you they are very real and dangerously tasty for the discriminating palates of yogis and non-yogis alike.
We’ve been laughing a lot this week. Well, who am I kidding? We laugh a lot every week. But this week it reminded me of a post I did way back in the day on Laughter Yoga. If you could use a good laugh, enjoy this post along with some updated video clips from yours truly, and from the founder of Laughter Yoga himself, Dr. Madan Kataria. He’s a riot in his own right! Without further ado, on with the blog...
This week we have our very first interview on The MOJO Show, where we chat with our dear friend Teresa Wessling. She’s one of our original co-founders and early adopters of the MOJO lifestyle, which you’ll hear more about in our conversation. She’s also the founder of HaveThatConversation.com - a website working towards creating a cultural shift: that we may overcome the taboo of talking about aging and death in our families and help ease the end of life process for us all.
That's right, yoga gave me a better butt. I say this not merely in reference to my much stronger physique from yoga, though that is a lovely perk. Rather, I'm referring to the trade I made with yoga that turned out to be one of the best deals of my life. I offered up the butts of my smoking habit to yoga and not only did it happily accept my offering, but also gave me, among many other wonderful things, that better butt in return. I've spoken briefly of my success with smoking cessation through yoga, but I feel compelled to write about it in more detail at the moment. Perhaps I can share something that will be useful to my fellow smoking cessation warriors out there.
So, there’s this Instagram and yoga thing going on. Maybe you’ve heard about it, or even seen it? Perhaps you even participate in it? In case you don’t know, here’s a little glimpse into the strange world of Instayoga. I hopped on the Instagram train a couple of months ago in preparation to launch MOJO Yoga. I created the MOJO Yoga account only to be promptly pulled away to a more important task for about an hour or so. When I returned to create my first post, I already had 3 or 4 dozen followers on my empty account. A little freaked out by this, I ask a friend of mine who’s already in this scene what might be going on to prompt such premature engagement. She says simply, “Anything yoga on Instagram is a hit.”
That's right, folks, we're venturing into the podcast world with this our inaugural episode of The MOJO Show. Now, you can get your weekly dose of MOJO wisdom all up in your ears while you get ready to leave the house, drive or commute to work, or heck, while you work! The MOJO Show is unlike anything we've done to date: co-founder Scott Johnson will be joining me, Jean Marie, each week to get candid and real about the topics we cover in the blog. And knowing how much Scott talks, we'll probably cover much more that I can't even imagine at the moment. This is the realization of a huge, longstanding goal of ours. We really hope you have as much fun tuning in to the episodes as we do making them.
